DinSide recently wrote about a wave of thefts in Puerto Rico and Arguineguín on Gran Canaria.

Now Canariavisen reports that a serial robber was arrested at the airport when he tried to leave the archipelago.

– According to the police, the man allegedly assaulted elderly tourists and stole valuable necklaces. Two of the victims had to be admitted to hospital after being exposed to the robber, writes the online newspaper.

– Took advantage of the high season

It is also reported that the man allegedly stole jewelery to the value of around 15,000 euros, which corresponds to just over NOK 176,000 at today’s exchange rate.

Nettavisa informs that the man is now in custody on Gran Canaria.

– According to the police, he took advantage of the high season in Gran Canaria to rob tourists, before traveling on to Barcelona. The man has also previously been identified in similar robbery cases. In 2022, he was identified as the suspect behind two such robberies, but he was never arrested because he had fled the country, Canariavisen writes.

Had to turn back after toilet trouble

– Naughtier than ever

In March, DinSide was in contact with Arne Voll, communications manager at Gjensidige, who stated that there had been a ten percent increase in theft in recent months.

– We know that there are tougher times financially for many. Not only for us in Norway, but also abroad. This affects many, and it means that the “thugs” have possibly become a few more. In addition, they often operate together and are more cunning and brash than ever, he said.

Gjensidige also receives cases where serious violence has been used during robbery and theft.

– Never resist if someone threatens you. Give up your valuables and retreat calmly. Valuables can be replaced, but it is more difficult with health, says the communications manager.
