On Sunday, it was reported that local residents in Málaga have become fed up with the ever-increasing tourism, and earlier DinSide mentioned that the hatred of tourists in the Canary Islands is increasing.

Now the Canarian Weekly and the travel website Flysmart24 report that the protests against tourists will become more visible, and that on 20 April a protest train will be mobilized against mass tourism in Tenerife and Gran Canaria.

– The politicians must take their share of the responsibility

Canarian Weekly writes that it will be the biggest demonstration in Tenerife’s history. Flysmart24 has contacted Leo Lunde, editor of Canariavisen, who explains that most Canarians want tourism, but that there can be too much of a good thing.

– The visitors’ lack of respect for local culture is one of the things that drives these tourist-critical attitudes – although the criticism mainly comes from rising house prices. The politicians must take their share of the responsibility here – and that share is not small, he tells the website.

Warns huge fines

In March, Canariavisen stated that in the last five years, the number of foreign tourists who own holiday homes in the Canary Islands has increased by 10.3 per cent.

Recently, Lunde wrote that the sale of homes to non-resident foreigners has pushed house prices to new heights, making it increasingly difficult for locals to find affordable homes.

“Tourists, go home”

Flysmart24 reports that protest signals have already been seen on Gran Canaria and Tenerife.

– So far, the protests have been barely visible. They have limited themselves to painting slogans such as “Tourists, go home” on house walls, writes Flysmart24.

NOK 3,000 a day

In January, Swedish Expressen wrote that tourist hatred is growing. On La Tejita beach in the south of Tenerife, the tourists were greeted by the following message: “Tourists, go home!” it was on a building by the popular beach.

It is not only in the Canary Islands that there are protests against tourists. The same has also happened in Greece, where people demonstrated to take back the beaches.
