Dozens of dead found at Shifa hospital – NRK Urix – Foreign news and documentaries

--

The Israeli military confirms on Monday morning that they have withdrawn from the hospital area they stormed two weeks ago.

An AFP journalist on the scene confirms that Israeli tanks and other vehicles have left the hospital.

The health authorities in Gaza say tens of dead have been found.

A doctor told the AFP news agency that more than 20 dead bodies had been found, and that some bodies had been run over when the forces withdrew.

Battles in the hospital

There has been fierce fighting at the hospital, which is the largest in the Gaza Strip, for several weeks.

Israel claimed last week to have killed 200 terrorists on the spot, while human rights activists called the fighting a direct attack on civilians.

Israel says it entered the hospital compound to find Hamas fighters.

The Israeli army began its operation on March 18, and says it was aimed at Hamas soldiers it believes are based in the hospital area. They claim that several soldiers have been killed in fighting in and around the hospital.

Hamas has refused to host hospitals.

During the siege, 107 patients and 60 employees are said to have been imprisoned in an old building on the hospital grounds.

It informs deputy health minister Yousef Abu Reech in Gaza in a text message relayed by Mats Gilbert.

Neither patients nor staff should have had access to food, medicine or drinking water for several days.

Last week, the international UN court ICJ demanded that Israel do everything necessary to provide food aid to Gaza.

International criticism

Israel controls all emergency aid to Gaza. The country has received strong international criticism for not allowing emergency aid, food and medicine into Gaza.

Earlier this week, the international UN court ICJ demanded that Israel do everything necessary to provide food aid to Gaza.

Spokesperson for the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Lior Haiat, however, signed https://twitter.com/liorhaiat/status/1773472467169796243?s=46&t=C_IpnZ82r3q6sVIRTUUsTg that Israel does not place restrictions on the necessary humanitarian aid to Gaza, and does not wish to harm the civilian population.

– The terrorist organization Hamas is to blame for the situation in the Gaza Strip and is responsible for the war, writes Haiat.

Israel also claims that Palestinian militants are hiding in al-Shifa hospital and in tunnels under the hospital, seeking cover among patients and medical personnel, writes the AFP news agency.

Website: Meeting Monday

According to sources for the website Axios, the US and Israel will have a digital meeting on Monday. This has not been confirmed publicly.

The website says it is the US’s alternative proposal for an Israeli invasion of Rafah that will be discussed.

The talks between Israeli and US officials were said to have taken place last week.

But after the United States abstained from voting against a ceasefire proposal in the UN Security Council, Israeli officials canceled the planned visit to the United States.

The Security Council then adopted a resolution demanding an immediate ceasefire in Gaza

US President Joe Biden has previously warned strongly against the Israeli plans for a major offensive against the city of Rafah in the south of the Gaza Strip.
