45 years after its debut, the Mercedes G-Class comes in an electric version. With silly effects and as much power as the crudest petrol variant, the AMG G 63.
It offers 588 horsepower, which should give a zero to hundred time in 4.7 seconds. Which is not bad at all, when we are talking about a car that weighs over three tonnes, but it is three tenths behind the AMG G 63.
Here are the latest news we’ve tested:
The battery is 116 kWt, and the range is stated to be 468 kilometres. The charging speed is 200 kW. The car will be able to go from 10 to 80 percent in around 32 minutes and has an 11 kW on-board charger. The energy consumption is of the fresh kind, between 27.7 and 30.3 kWh/100 km.
Frame
The battery is integrated into the vehicle’s frame construction, which should provide a low center of gravity and make the car more rigid. In addition, the car has independent front suspension and a rigid rear axle that has been completely rebuilt. The electric motors are attached to the frame structure.
And of course the battery is placed water and dirt-proof. For the battery version, it is still a genuine all-terrain vehicle:
- Ground clearance between the axles of at least 250 mm
- Maximum wading depth of 850 mm in water and mud
- Stable driving on side slopes of up to 35°
- Entry and exit angles of 32° and 30.7°
- Breaking angle of 20.3°
Among the more theatrical effects are G-Turn, G-steering and G-Roar.
- G-Turn means that the car can more or less turn around on the spot. “This not only looks spectacular, but it can also be helpful when you drive off-road,” writes Mercedes in the press release.
- G-Steering allows you to control the torque individually on each wheel. Which should mean that the turning circle of the car can be reduced considerably during off-road driving or when driving on loose surfaces.
- G-Roar “adds a unique sound experience to the new electric G-Class.” Here, there is talk of them recreating the sound from the V8 models.
