Have you not yet gone through the numbers and submitted your tax return? Then you start to run out of time.

– Everyone should open and check the tax return. If you do not check it, the Swedish Tax Agency uses the information that is pre-filled. This could mean that you risk paying too much tax, for example if you have not entered a deduction to which you are entitled, or that we are using the wrong information, says Marta Johanne Gjengedal, divisional director at the Swedish Tax Agency, who has issued a press release with frequently asked questions and answers:

What happens if I don’t check the tax return?

If you are a wage earner or pensioner and do not submit your tax return before the deadline, the tax return is considered to have been submitted with the information that was filled in beforehand. You yourself are responsible for the correctness of the information. That is why it is important that you check.

What if I can’t deliver by the deadline?
You can apply for a delayed delivery deadline. You can get a postponement of up to 30 days, and the deadline for applying is 30 April. If you get a deferral, you can’t expect to get your tax settlement in June. Last year, there were 77,000 people who applied for a postponement of the delivery of their tax return.

What if you remember something after the deadline has passed?

If you discover that you have forgotten something or you receive new information, log in to skatteetaten.no, make the changes and submit the tax return again – you can do this at any time up to three years after the delivery deadline.

When will my tax money arrive?

After your tax return has been submitted, the Tax Agency must process it and prepare a tax settlement. In the tax settlement, it is stated how much money you will get back (credit) or how much you have to pay (residual tax).

If you have submitted your tax return, but have still not received your tax settlement, it may be due, for example, to the fact that you have made many changes or added attachments that the Tax Agency must check, that you have not provided all the necessary information or that you have been selected for random control.

You will be notified when your tax settlement is ready.

When must the residual tax be paid?

If you receive the tax settlement before 30 June, the payment deadline for the first invoice is 20 August.

Beyond the autumn, there is an ongoing tax settlement and then you will receive the invoice no later than 3 weeks after the tax settlement is ready. You will receive an invoice well in advance of the payment deadline.

If the residual tax is over NOK 1,000, it is divided into two equal invoices.

Cut interest on tax arrears

If you see that you are owed back tax, you can choose to pay it early. If you pay by 31 May at the latest, you will not have to pay interest.
