To say that 2024 has not had a good start to the cinema visit is perhaps a bit of an understatement. We’re now a third of the way through the calendar year, and only three films have passed the $500 million milestone.

In fact, only three films have passed the $200 million milestone, then apart from Dune: Part Two at over $704 million, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire at around $520 million and now Kung Fu Panda 4 at $503 million , no other film has generated more money from box office sales than Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire and its $188 million.

But that’s right, Kung Fu Panda 4 has now passed the half a billion dollar milestone at the box office, further cementing it as one of the biggest films of the year. With Godzilla x Kong debuting around the same time as Kung Fu Panda 4, it will be a close race as to which film ends up on top when they finish their theatrical runs.

In reference to how poorly the box office seems to be performing so far this year, only eight films in total have climbed above $100 million, the eighth of which was the very poorly received Madame Web which clocked in just above $100 million. 2023 managed to deliver 50 $100 million grosses in total, which as a general reference point would mean that it averaged just over 16 $100 million films per four months, something 2024 has only managed to deliver half of so far.

Thank you, Box Office Mojo.
