– The Cherchi family has announced with great sadness that their beloved son Stefan died peacefully today. The family is very grateful for the love, prayers and messages from the horse racing community around the world, the Jockeys’ Association of the Australian state of New South Wales said.
Cherchi had recently switched to riding races in Australia after competing in the UK for the past few years.
He was involved in a racing accident in Canberra on 20 March. His horse, Hasime, fell and dragged two other horses with it. The other two jockeys also fell from their horses, but escaped the accident without serious injury.
Cherchi received medical treatment on the field before being taken to hospital with head injuries and internal bleeding. He died in hospital on Wednesday.
