Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump won Florida in the 2016 and 2020 elections, but Biden’s team claims opposition to strict abortion laws may have put the state back in the running.

“Abortion rights are going to be at the center of the election in Florida this year,” says a memo from Biden’s campaign apparatus, outlining how they hope to flip Florida Democratic in the November election.

The memo comes after it was announced on Monday that the Florida Supreme Court is opening a Republican-backed law that would ban abortion in the state after six weeks of pregnancy.

Democrats credit the abortion cause for their surprisingly good showing in the 2022 midterm elections. However, how much the abortion cause will affect Florida, a state of 22 million people, is unclear.

Florida has turned Republican in recent years. The last time a Democratic presidential candidate won the state was in 2012, when Barack Obama walked away with the victory. Trump himself lives in the state.

Florida is considered the most important swing state in the US presidential election, as with its 29 electors, it is the state with the third most electors in the country.

Only California (55) and Texas (38) have more electors than Florida, while New York (29) has the same number. However, these states are not swing states, and there is therefore not particularly great tension attached to which party will win there.
