In addition to AI with iPadOS 18, Apple’s focus for the new iPad Pro OLED, which will probably be more expensive than the current models, is precisely the screen quality which must be extra good.

Apple is supposed to use the very best OLED panels

We have heard this before, most recently in March: “Now it is announced that Apple has ordered 8.5 million OLED panels, and the quality requirements will be so high that the two manufacturers, Samsung and LG, are still struggling to maximize production efficiency. In addition to far better image quality (and brightness,) and we expect always-on functionality that iPadOS is now able to take advantage of, the thickness of the largest 13″ is cut by over 1mm,” we reported at the time – also the dimensions have leaked:

  • 12″ iPad Pro increases from 280.6 mm x 214.9 mm x 6.4 mm to 281.5 mm x 215.5 mm x 5.0 mm
  • 11″ iPad Pro increases from 247.6 mm x 178.5 mm x 5.9 mm to 249.7 mm x 177.5 mm x 5.1 mm
  • 12″ iPad Air: 280.6 mm x 214.9 mm x 6.0 mm

And this with screen quality has again been confirmed as the important thing, perhaps only after AI. Besides a thinner board, probably also with slimmer frames, the reliable Ross Young of “Display Supply Chain Consultants” claims that Apple’s new iPad Pro OLED screens “are by far the best OLED tablet panels on the market,” and that the iPads will also have better battery life:

“Apple will announce new iPads after not announcing any new iPads last year. For the first time, Apple will introduce iPads with OLED screens as part of both the 11.1″ and 12.9″ iPad Pro models. With Apple the dominant tablet vendor, the transition to OLED will drive significant growth for the OLED tablet market in 2024. OLED iPad panels are expected to be the clear best OLED tablet panels on the market with LTPO, 120Hz refresh, a tandem stacking and thinning glass that resulting in ultra-thin and light screens with high brightness, extended battery life and longevity.”

That is why LTPO is important

It was Apple who invented LTPO, “Low-temperature Polycrystalline Oxide.” The advantage of the technology is that the screen refresh can be adjusted from static content to, in this case 120Hz, which gives the advantage of always-on functionality:

“LTPO allows for more efficient use of power by dynamically adjusting the refresh rate of the screen based on the content being displayed. This means that the screen can operate at a low refresh rate when displaying static images or text, but can increase to a higher refresh rate when displaying dynamic content such as videos or games,” summarizes Wikipedia.

The new iPads with extra good panels are flanked by a new Apple Pencil 3 with vibration feedback and several gestures, as well as a Magic Keyboard in aluminium. Tim Cook has hinted at a new Pencil on the X – ditto for the invite.
