Kevin Magnussen is just two penalty points short of being banned from Formula 1 races.

--

Danish Kevin Magnussen (31) risks writing Formula 1 history, but hardly in a way he had hoped for.

Tuesday 7 May at 17:43

The short version

  • Kevin Magnussen risks becoming the first F1 driver to receive a one-race suspension due to penalty points.
  • The Haas driver has 10 penalty points, just 2 away from the 12 point limit.
  • The penalty points could affect his future in Formula 1 and his reputation as a “dirty” driver.
  • Magnussen received penalty points in both the sprint and the main race in Miami.
  • Atle Gulbrandsen often believes that the judgments in Formula 1 are too strict.

After a disastrous World Cup round in Miami, the Haas driver is only two points away from the penalty limit of 12 points. The next time it ends with a ban from one race.

If so, he will be the first Formula 1 driver to receive this penalty – ten years after the system was introduced.

– Magnussen must be careful going forward, otherwise he risks having to stand over a race, says Viaplay commentator Atle Gulbrandsen.

– If he gets two more penalty points, then he has to face a race, and two penalty points are the same as he got for the collision with Sargeant in Miami, for example.

Kevin Magnussen now has 10 penalty points, and at the same time has arrived in 2024:

  • Saudi Arabia Grand Prix: 3.
  • China Grand Prix: 2.
  • Miami Sprint: 3rd.
  • Miami Grand Prix: 2nd.

The rule is that a driver is banned if he gets 12 points during a 12-month period.

What does this mean for the Danes’ future in Formula 1? The question goes to Atle Gulbrandsen:

– All the penalty points are not lucky for Magnussen in terms of his future in Formula 1 either, and he is seen as a “dirty” driver.

– On the other hand, I think it is often judged too strictly in Formula 1. If we had cars that are easier to overtake and tracks without asphalt in the exit zones, we would have avoided situations like the one in Miami where Magnussen blocked Hamilton.

The Dane first received a three-point penalty in the sprint on Saturday, because he obstructed Lewis Hamilton. It helped that teammate Nico Hülkenberg got WC points in 7th place.

He then scored two points after causing a crash with Logan Sargeant in the Grand Prix race on Sunday. This collision was probably also decisive for the result with Lando Norris taking his first career Grand Prix victory ahead of world champion Max Verstappen.

– He has a bit of a reputation for being a “naught boy”, says Viaplay expert and former world champion Mika Häkkinen to his own channel.

Magnussen was number 18 in both the sprint and the main race in Miami.

He received a total of four time penalties, three of them for 10 seconds and one for five seconds.

Formula 1’s own transcript from his statements after the race on Sunday says most:

– Hm, a disappointing race?

– Yeah.

– Could it have been worse? A hellish weekend in every way?

– I agree.

– Do you have any comment on the clash with Logan?

– It is best that I say nothing.

– You are obviously not satisfied?

– Of course not.
