When Mohamed Salah was about to be substituted just over ten minutes before the end of the match between West Ham and Liverpool last weekend, a discussion arose between the Liverpool star and manager Jürgen Klopp.

After the match, Klopp said they had put the incident behind them, while Salah stated that “if he speaks today, it will catch fire”.

The Egyptian was clearly displeased.

– You despise it

In an article in The Athletic, the all-time top scorer in the Premier League, Alan Shearer, speaks about the incident between the Liverpool profiles.

– I have been in Mohamed Salah’s shoes. “I’ve been on the sidelines when games are coming to a close in the latter part of my career and the manager who dropped me from the team admits we’re in the hole and he’s asking me to win the game for him,” Shearer said.

– Deep down you may recognize that you are not quite the same player you were and that age and injuries have taken a little away from you. But it is swallowed by anger, selfishness and pride. “Hell, I wasn’t good enough yesterday, but now you need me,” says Shearer.

Shearer says he felt that way when Sir Bobby Robson dropped him from the Newcastle team.

– When you sit on the bench you think and ponder. You smile when your team scores, even though you hardly want to celebrate. Salah is 31 and has been Liverpool’s great player, the superstar of the Jürgen Kopp era. He has saved them so many times. Now he may not be in his best form, but he is probably thinking “who is he putting in for me? Is he really better than me?”.

– It doesn’t need to end like this

The former top scorer says he has sympathy and understanding for both Klopp’s and Salah’s side of the story. Now he hopes that an argument between the two is not what will be left in the end.

– It looked like they were heading for an incredible finish. It can’t happen now, but this team can still fight for him (Klopp) in the last three games.

– Everything ends at some point – it just doesn’t have to end like this, says Shearer.

Liverpool face Tottenham, Aston Villa and Wolves in their last three games of the season.
