Jenny-Julia Danielsson recently admitted in an interview with Finnish YLE that she has struggled with mental health problems for a long time.

She talks about the high pressure she has put on herself as an athlete and the many rude comments she receives.

“Why does a man play on the women’s team” and “Can you give me mustache tips”, are some of the things she has heard, according to Expressen.

– People find it tiring

It was especially after a match between Finland and Denmark in the football European Championship in 2022 that it exploded in the inbox of the 29-year-old.

Several of the messages that came in were, among other things, about the pigment spot she had gotten on her upper lip that summer.

– There were a whole lot of comments about my appearance. I didn’t understand why, and why so many people wrote what they wrote. I was there because I wanted to show something on the pitch. When I did that, people would rather point to things that had nothing to do with football.

– I know that there are an incredible number of people who followed the EC, but this is probably what made an impression on people when I entered the field. People find my appearance tiresome. My God, it’s going so wrong, the footballer continues.

Said nothing – until now

She admits that she was upset and upset by the messages from total strangers, but she said nothing.

It wasn’t until two years later that she opened up for the first time about the harassment and the psychological problems that followed.

– I have always been the fun and happy player in the team who tries to make others happy, says Danielsson.

Not even her closest friends knew anything about what she had experienced.

– It is sickening that quite a few of my close friends, whom I have known for many years and played on the national team with, wrote to me that they knew nothing about this. They think it was incredibly good that I dared to come forward with this, because it happens all the time.

Furthermore, the footballer says that it was not easy to talk about the harassment in public.

– It’s the first time I’ve ever talked about it. It’s been so many years that I haven’t said a word.

– It was a scary step to take, she admits.

Got into a car accident

Danielsson has 30 caps for the Finnish national team and has played for a number of clubs. Among other things, she has been in Scottish Rangers, Swedish club AIK, Spanish Sporting Club de Huelva and FC Honka in her home country of Finland.

Recently, she was also involved in a car accident, along with former teammate Hannah Davison, during a trip to the USA.

– My life came to a complete halt, because it was terrifying. I really needed to stop for a bit, damn it was close.

– But I still didn’t talk to anyone about it, she says about the accident.
