It has been nice not to write or talk about injury news around the Liverpool squad for the past two weeks, but at today’s press conference before the Merseyside derby, Jürgen Klopp again brought bad news.

Diogo Jota, who scored the 3-1 goal against Fulham on Sunday, is injured again.

– Yes, unfortunately. Diogo (Jota) scored, but felt a small problem at the same time, so now he is out for a couple of weeks, Klopp replied.

The journalists in the press room also asked a follow-up question regarding the Portuguese’s new injury.

– I can’t say much to be honest. He felt it a bit in his hip (previously), but he was in good shape. He then started against Fulham, feeling fine in form, but felt it again when he scored. It’s not a big injury, but we’ve come late in the season, added the Liverpool manager.

Back to Villa?

If the 27-year-old is out for a couple of weeks, he will undoubtedly miss the away games against Everton and West Ham. The Tottenham game at Anfield on 5 May will probably also come too early. He certainly looks set to make it to the last two games, away to Aston Villa and at home to Wolverhampton.

Jürgen Klopp tried to be positive when the question came up in the press room.

– It is obviously not a good time to get an injury to a player. Of course he is not available tomorrow, but fortunately he will be back in two weeks.

Darwin Nunez and Mohamed Salah warmed the bench from the start against Fulham on Sunday, and one of them is likely to take Jota’s place in the Merseyside derby. Luis Diaz and Cody Gakpo are also injury-free, so luckily there are plenty of options up front, but this was anything but good news.

Everton – Liverpool kicks off on Wednesday at 21.00, and broadcast live on V Sport PL and Viaplay.
