Marcus Kleveland, Snowboard | Marcus Kleveland: World star with his feet safely planted on the board

DOVRE (Nettavisen): You can quickly end up as a partner Marcus Cleveland (24) in the T-hook in Dombå’s ski lifts; the facility where he literally grew up and laid the foundation for world stardom and success in snowboarding.

Here he can be in peace.

Nobody cares that it is Marcus Kleveland who takes a few slow tricks, or playfully slides on an almost infinitely long rail with all kinds of jumps, bounces and jumps.

It’s kind of just Marcus.

The local boy who accidentally ended up as a world star.

First with this in competition

After all, he only has 13 X Games medals (eight of them gold) and one WC Slopestyle gold from Aspen in 2021.

And he was the first in the world to carry one out Quad Cork 1800 in competition. It happened in the X Games in Aspen in 2017.

There are quite a few young and promising talents who have received tips and learning from the role model from Dombås; the major road junction in Dovre municipality.

Where he “plays” between skiing debutantes, half-relaxed Danish Easter tourists and playful and fearless toddlers who hope to reach as far and as high as the local role model.

Apparently, he often trains when the ground is closed to the public.

Sun outside, sun in the mind

– Sure, he replies smiling when my eleven-year-old daughter, who alternates between snowboarding and skiing, asks if he has time to sign her helmet.

He smiles at the sun as he puts down his board with the greatest of naturalness and takes the gold thousand my daughter has in her hand.

– It looks like you’re enjoying yourself. It’s good, he says as he signs the helmet.

– Do you think it’s cold today? I think so, he continues before smilingly saying thank you and aiming for the T-hook and another trip up to his playground.

Greatness and magnanimity

The friendliness and joviality makes me think of many “empty and flat influencers”. The influencers who often have nothing but themselves, the person, to offer.

Usually in a commercial and unfortunately all too often awkward packaging.

Here; the world’s best snowboarder, who on the half-skip and without frills, easily takes a young talent under his wing for a while and shares tips or a place in the ski lift.

Greatness and true magnanimity. A down-to-earth role model. A true role model.

Honor be.

Kleveland, Killi and Red Bull

Dombås has become a name and a destination among freestyle riders and snowboarders.

Birk Ruudthe freestyle rider who will now see if he can become just as good at snowboarding, is one of those who has spent a lot of time at Dombås.

A park of dimensions, with dozens of jumps and rails in every imaginable size and shape, has become a reality with the combination Marcus Kleveland, the freestyle rider Johanne Killi (also from Dombås) and money from, among others, Red Bull.

Last year he invited “everyone” to the end of the season at home, in what he himself defined as “the best park I’ve driven in”.

Away good, but Dombås best

Marcus realized early on that he was good, and that this could be big.

He chose snowboarding over school.

– The park at Dombås is the reason why I have become so good, without a doubt. I have always known the people who operate here and have been able to help build features and decide how things should be, so it has always been a really good place for me to train, he has previously stated in an interview with main sponsor Red Bull.

He is of the homely type who obviously never forgets who he is and where he comes from.

– I have often chosen to go home to Dombås rather than travel elsewhere, and have never really driven anywhere else for a long time. The park at Dombås has meant a lot to my snowboarding, he said in the same interview

Gone good, but home is best.
