At 19:00, iOS 16 is launched, but that’s not all you get at once

--

Apple will finally release the big iOS 16 update at 19:00 tonight.

A total of nine functions are postponed

The most exciting thing is the new lock screen, which is more interactive than before, and with the biggest attraction where the user can choose the font, backgrounds with color filters and the information they want in the form of small and medium-sized icons.

As usual, there are features that are not launched at the same time as the rollout. Apple now says iCloud Shared Photo Library will launch later this year, perhaps with iOS 16.1 in October? iPadOS is already on this version number, and because new iPads are expected next month, it sounds logical.

A brand new lock screen experience is the biggest new thing this year.

There are also eight other features you will have to wait for, and there is no information on when this will be made available:

  • Live activities (maybe not Norway): real-time update of sports and services such as Uber and Lyft on the lock screen:

  • Game Center SharePlay: play with friends with FaceTime. SharePlay is supported for games that use the Games Center multiplayer feature. Apple: “Later this year, Game Center will introduce a redesigned overview where the player can see what games friends are playing, their awards and records in different games in one place. And with SharePlay integration, players can start multiplayer games with friends right from a FaceTime call.”
  • Game Center Contacts Integration: See what your friends are playing in the Contacts app.
  • Support for Matters. Apple: “In addition, it gains support for Matter, a new connectivity standard for smart homes, which makes compatible accessories work together across platforms and provides greater freedom of choice without compromising security.”
  • The Home app gets better performance, especially for homes with a lot of equipment. Apple: “The Home app gets a completely new design that makes it easier to navigate, organize, display and control smart home accessories. In addition, it gains support for Matter, a new connectivity standard for smart homes, which enables compatible accessories to work together across platforms and provide greater freedom of choice without compromising security.”
  • Freeform : Apple: “Freeform is a new, versatile collaboration app that gives users the ability to view, share and collaborate in one place without having to think about layouts and page sizes – and the app has full support for the Apple Pencil.”

  • iCloud Shared Album: Apple: “Shared iCloud Photo Library is the easiest way to share photos. It’s completely automatic, and up to six family members can collaborate and view photo collections in the Memories, Featured Photos and Photos widget. Users can share all the photos they’ve taken, or use configuration tools to contribute photos from a certain date or by certain people. Photos can be added to the collection manually, using Bluetooth or through the sharing suggestions in For you. When someone in the shared library adds, edits, or deletes images, the library is updated for everyone.”

Share iCloud photos automatically.
  • Key sharing (perhaps not Norway): the ability to securely share keys in Apple Wallet via messaging apps and Mail.
  • Simple shortcuts: “Siri adds the ability to run shortcuts from apps automatically, completely without configuration. Users can now insert emojis when sending messages with Siri, and they can skip the confirmation step in sending by enabling this feature in Settings. Siri can now handle more types of requests without internet access, and users can end a phone call completely hands-free by simply saying, “Hey, Siri. Add on.”

tvOS 16 and watchOS 9

First and foremost, tvOS 16 gets better at gaming with Apple’s updated Metal 3 graphics framework. Also added is expanded gamepad support and support for Matter as of iOS 16.

There’s not much more to it than this, beyond a feature Apple hasn’t revealed anything more about than this:

“Integrate your tvOS app with your iOS, iPadOS or watchOS app to unlock new shows on Apple TV.

Apple

watchOS 9 has, among other things (check everything out at Apple):

New activity views.

Training zones.

Create custom training programs.

Compete with yourself. Also works with a bicycle. Will be launched later this year.
