Did you remember to submit your tax return?

--

This year, the tax authority has sent out approximately 5.1 million tax notices for the year 2023.

The day before the deadline for returning the tax return expires, 2.8 million Norwegians have done so.

A total of 4 million have opened it.

If you do not deliver your tax return yourself, it will be delivered automatically at midnight Tuesday. Then you also accept that the content entered by the Swedish Tax Agency in advance is correct.

They base the figures on previous tax settlements, estimates of wage growth and interest rate trends, but that does not mean that everything is correct.

– What you should do is go through and see if the numbers that have been filled in in advance are correct, and then you should think about whether there is something that is not there, but which should have been included. It can be both income and deductions.

That’s what Rolf Lothe, head of the Taxpayers Association, says.

It is your responsibility that the content is correct

You are responsible for ensuring that the content of the tax return is correct. If it turns out that you have reported the wrong numbers, there may be consequences.

In the worst case, you risk paying more tax than necessary, or being required to pay more than you were originally supposed to additional tax.

– If you evade the regulations, you always run the risk of being followed up. The Swedish Tax Agency can impose additional tax if you provide incorrect information in the tax return, says Divisional Director of the Swedish Tax Agency Marta Johanne Gjengedal.

Most people receive their tax settlement between April and June, while some have to wait until autumn. In any case, everyone will receive their tax settlement before 1 December.

If you do not submit your tax return before the deadline, or have arrears of tax, you will receive your tax settlement in June at the earliest.

May have the deadline postponed

If you have not checked your tax until the last minute, but want to examine the information in more detail, you can request a postponement.

– You do that electronically at skatteetaten.no, and you get it automatically, so it’s very easy. Then you get a month’s postponement, and it’s a good idea to do it if you don’t get to check it properly, says Lothe.

However, should you discover that you have forgotten something after you have submitted your tax return and the deadline has expired, you can make changes for up to three years after the deadline.

– You will then receive a new tax settlement based on the new information, says Gjengedal.
