A bunch of Apple users flocked to social media just before the weekend to report that they had been signed out of their Apple IDs, and had to reset their passwords when they tried to sign back in.

This is reported by The Verge, which writes that the majority of users say it happened on the night of Friday.

Some users had to enter their iPhone passcode to reconnect to iCloud, while others with the anti-theft feature enabled had to wait an hour before they could log in.

Not sure what the cause is

Apple’s system status page shows no problems with their services, and it’s still unclear if this was a widespread problem. However, the website 9to5Mac reports that some of their employees were also affected.

A Mastodon user was reportedly told by Apple support that “sometimes random security updates are added to your account” and that this was the reason for the reboot. On Reddit, another user had spoken to Apple, who was able to confirm that his password “was changed around midnight.”

Some also had to reset app-specific passwords for third-party apps that use their Apple ID.

Not everyone was forced to change their password. One Reddit user wrote that a password change was only “suggested”.

Developer Michael Tsai wrote that he had to wait an hour to reset because of Apple’s new anti-theft feature, which only exempts a few locations from the delay.

Apple has not yet commented on the incident.
