Crown Prince Frederik paid tribute to Queen Margrethe in a moving speech

--

In January this year, it was 50 years since Queen Margrethe (82), then as a 31-year-old, took over the Danish throne from her father, King Frederik.

This weekend, the anniversary was celebrated in Copenhagen, and together with the Danish royal family, the Norwegian and Swedish royal couple gathered to pay tribute to the jubilee.

Various events were on the programme, including a gala performance and a lunch on the Kongeskipet Dannebrog. On Sunday evening, the stage was set for a celebratory dinner at Christiansborg Castle, and as expected, a number of speeches were made for the queen during the dinner.

One of those who spoke to the celebrant was her eldest son, and thus the next heir to the throne, Crown Prince Frederik (54). The man who is not known to be a particularly good speaker, however, convinced “everyone” after he paid tribute to his mother on Sunday.

Praise the mother

– It was one of the crown prince’s very best – if not the best speech ever, BT’s royal correspondent Jacob Heinel Jensen told the Danish newspaper.

In his speech, he addressed, among other things, the differences between the two:

Reveals touching detail

– You paint, I train. You dig for finds from the past, I buried myself to avoid being discovered during my time in the Armed Forces. You master words, I lack it sometimes, said Crown Prince Frederik.

He also added that his mother has prepared him well when he will one day take over her job as regent, and that when the time comes he will lead the ship forward with what they have shared as ballast.

The speech in its entirety can be read on the Danish royal house’s own website.

– You’re the boss

The royal correspondent does not hold back his enthusiasm after the crown prince’s well-chosen words.

– It was exceptionally beautifully done. You could also see how the queen lit up more and more the further he got into the speech. He could both be himself in the speech and still pay tribute to his mother. He said “you are the boss”, which is a very Crown Prince Frederik-like “down to earth” way of referring to his mother. And she just sat and blushed, smiled and was very proud of her son because he gave his speech like that.

Jensen further emphasizes that the whole thing was a “very, very moving moment in Danish royal history”.
