Parts of the country can expect temperatures above 20 degrees

The spring heat is finally here, and the timing is perfect. The meteorologists expect temperatures above 20 degrees in several places.

In recent weeks, it has been northern Norway that has had terrible weather, with lots of sun and almost no precipitation.

The downside is that dry weather over time creates a risk of forest fires.

– Forest fire warnings have been announced in unexpected places, and this will probably continue into the coming week as well. There may be some scattered rain showers – in Finnmark it can also come as snow – but nothing heavy, says meteorologist on duty Charalampos Sarchosidis at the Meteorological Institute.

In the week that is now coming to an end, it has become a little colder in the north, and it will continue over the weekend as well.

– On Sunday-Monday, a low pressure will move north in the North Sea and to the Norwegian Sea, with rain spreading north in southern Norway and on Monday to Nordland, explains stormgeo’s on-duty energy meteorologist, Beathe Tveita in Stormgeo.

She says that on Tuesday you can expect scattered rain northwards in parts of Troms, with an improvement in the weather further south in the country.

Seeing the sun in the south

Now it is the people further south who get the best weather, with a taste of spring.

– In southern Norway, Friday and Saturday will be decent days, while on Sunday there will be a few rounds of precipitation. But already on Monday evening you can enjoy a bit more spring-like weather again, says Sarchosidis.

Where the year’s first official temperature measurement above 20 degrees is made varies from year to year. A couple of weeks ago it was close in Lier in Buskerud. On 11 April, 19.7 degrees were recorded there!

But next week the barrier will be broken, believes meteorologist Charalampos Sarchosidis at the Meteorological Institute.

– From Trøndelag and down towards Oslo, it will be more spring-like weather in the coming week. Rogaland and Vestlandet are the areas where there is the greatest chance of getting above 20 degrees, he says.

Great on May 1 – some places

And the very best prospects are on Wednesday 1 and Thursday 2 May. In other words, the timing could not have been better. As you know, many Norwegians have May 1 off, and many probably have plans to take a long weekend.

– May 1 looks like it’s going to be fantastic! says Sarchosidis.

Tveita in StormGeo also believes in pleasant temperatures in the south of the country.

The separation between air masses with different density, temperature and humidity is called a front in weather contexts.

The front that Tveita mentioned at the beginning, which brings some rain and wind to the north in Nordland and parts of Troms, will weaken as we approach the turn of the month.

– On Wednesday 1 May, this front may weaken over Finnmark with scattered rain, and some showers in Troms. Further south in the country there will be lingering weather on 1 May, says Beathe Tveita in StormGeo.

She mentions that an easterly wind field over southern Norway can give some more clouds in the eastern mountains, while the areas in the west get a lot of sun and nice weather. She reserves the right to some uncertainty related to a low rainfall area approaching the country from the south, and says that the forecasts may change slightly as we approach. But that it will be warm and nice in southern Norway, she completely agrees with Sarchosidis in the Meteorological Institute.

Enjoy the fine weather, whoever has it

– Temperatures will rise significantly next week, maybe 15 degrees and even more on Wednesday 1 May, both south of Stad and Dovre, but also north to Trøndelag, says Tveita in StormGeo.

In parts of the country you can therefore look forward to good temperatures and fine weather, but unfortunately the 20 degrees do not look set to remain, so there is every reason to enjoy spring to the full now while you have the chance.

– As early as next weekend, it looks like the temperatures will drop back down to this week’s level in southern Norway, says Charalampos Sarchosidis at the Meteorological Institute.

– After milder weather next week, it can get cooler again around 4-6. May and beyond. This is a long time away, and the forecasts are uncertain. As we approach 17 May, it could potentially turn around and become somewhat milder again, but with the possibility of low pressure activity towards southern Norway, says Beathe Tveita in StormGeo.

The weather service Yr launched earlier this year a new long-term forecast that goes a full 21 days into the future. The uncertainty in the weather forecast increases the further into the forecast period you get.

The 21-day forecast is divided into three rolling seven-day blocks, which give an indication of the trend in temperature and precipitation going forward. 17 May is at the very end of the 21-day period that was published on Friday 26 April, so the meteorologists stress that the uncertainty is great.

With all these caveats, it may look like the capital area may get the warmest weather on National Day, with 20 degrees, while most of southern Norway will also get reasonably comfortable temperatures.

Further north, the temperature outlook is somewhat lower.
