Hundreds of whales in the Nordkapp – NRK Troms and Finnmark

--

The case was first discussed by iFinnmark.

For the experienced fisherman Kjell-Vidar Forsberg, it is almost commonplace to see whales during the working day. But on Tuesday morning, the fishing trip was a little out of the ordinary.

– Seeing whales in itself is not that special. But what was spectacular today was that it was so beyond many of them, says Forsberg.

FISHER: Kjell-Vidar has been fishing since he was 17 years old. He has never previously seen so many whales at once as he did on Tuesday.

Several hundred of them

Forsberg and his three colleagues started the day as usual; Out with the boat at seven in the morning, drive for about one hour out into the Kamøyfjord in the North Cape, and then start hauling nets. Eventually they had to stop because of the sight that surrounded the whole boat.

– There must have been several hundred of them, because water was blowing up everywhere, says Forsberg.

– The sun hit the water just right, and there was practically no wind, so that the water that the whales blew up was several meters in the air! So then I had to pull up the phone to extend this memory.

Here you can see some of the “fountains” the whales made in the Kamøyfjord.

Looking for food

Kjell-Vidar Forsberg believes that the reason for the overwhelming number of whales has to do with the fish in the Kamøyfjord.

– They are looking for food. The whales eat soldering ironand there were certainly a lot of them in the area.

Despite the large number of whales, Forsberg was not worried about any competition for the fish.

– We are fishing for cod, so we are looking for two different fish. The only thing is that the cod eats capelin.

– How was the catch today?

– We have brought in a lot of fish today, so we have not noticed any difference from previous trips. The whales have not been a problem for us, says Forsberg.

Went on a whale watching

He admits to having been a bit spoiled when it comes to seeing whales, but that he and his family have gone on a whale watching trip to see the mammals up close.

– Already last year, the whole family was on several riib safaris, so we like going to see them. We’ve even been so close that when the whale blows up water, you get splashed all over you!
