It was something completely new, the TV series “Ally McBeal”.
The viewers sat as if chained when the rather special lawyers took the screens in the late 90s. The main role was played by Calista Flockhart (59), a slender woman with great charisma and tiny skirts, known for her failed love life and her strange hallucinations.
Thought she was sick
Calista came from the theatre, and got her first TV role in 1989. In the following years, she did some small roles on film and TV, and bigger roles on Broadway – including in a production of “The Glass Menagerie”.
The role of Ally was a wild success, but the medal always has a flip side. In Calista’s case, it was the constant accusations that she was suffering from anorexia.
– It didn’t add up. But there was nothing I could do to convince people that it wasn’t true, she said recently in a portrait interview in the New York Times.
– But it was painful, it was complicated, and I was afraid that it would destroy my career. I didn’t think anyone would give me another job because they would assume I had anorexia and that would be the end of it, she continued.
– Now it’s over
Fortunately, it didn’t work out that way. After five years with “Ally McBeal”, Calista was offered to play one of the main roles in “Frustrated Wives”. Shortly before, she had adopted a little boy, so she turned down the role, which instead went to Teri Hatcher (59).
But when the TV series “Brothers and Sisters” arrived in 2006, Calista said yes – and it was another success for her.
Current and old
But the greatest of all is love, and Calista found it while she was at the peak of her career. His name was Harrison Ford, he was 21 years older than her and divorced twice, and had a long experience of being rich and famous.
They met for the first time at the Golden Globe Awards in 2002.
The Hollywood couples “everyone” has forgotten
Harrison hadn’t seen the TV series “Ally McBeal,” but he certainly noticed Calista, who was glowing in her rose-red strapless Oscar de la Renta gown. His agent introduced them.
– Harrison came over to say hi. When he left, I said, “Ugh, what a busy old man. What’s he doing?” After the presentation, we started talking. Then I was charmed by him, Calista told the New York Times this year.
The year after their first meeting, she spoke for the first time about him being so much older than her.
– I like how he looks when he wakes up. He’s not handsome – he’s more cute. He looks like a little boy, she told People magazine.
– The age difference doesn’t bother me. Sometimes I forget that he is 22 years older than me. It has no bearing on our relationship at all, she continued.
Enjoyed being a mom
Harrison already had four children, and happily took on the role of father to Calista’s son Liam (22), who had barely started walking when he greeted him for the first time. And Calista really enjoyed being a mom.
Accused of adultery
– Now I work two or three days a week, and the rest of the time is family time. I can’t imagine anything better than how life is now. Motherhood has changed every fiber of my being, she told People magazine in 2007.
In 2010, she and Harrison said yes to each other, and Harrison adopted Liam.
Now Liam has grown up and is a student, and Calista and Harrison have been watching an extraordinary number of award ceremonies and premieres. Calista is highly topical in the new TV series “Feud: Capote vs. The Swans” which you can stream on HBO Max.
The beautiful star is still in her 50s, but she will turn 60 before Christmas. But she is young compared to her husband, who has stepped into his 80s by a wide margin.
Nevertheless – the age difference still doesn’t bother them.
– I often feel like the oldest of us. He is so immature,” Calista gleefully told the New York Times.
