Google laid off 200 employees before the release of figures

--

Just ahead of the quarterly report on April 25, Google dismissed at least 200 employees from its core business, writes CNBC, which claims to have seen internal documents.

In addition, several positions are said to have been moved to India and Mexico.

The core business is responsible for the technical foundation of Google’s products as well as security. The departments within the business include information technology developers, the company’s Python development team, technical infrastructure, security experts, app developers and various engineering roles to ensure operations run smoothly.

At least 50 of the positions eliminated were in engineering at the company’s offices in California, according to CNBC, which writes that Google will hire similar roles in Mexico and India.

Asim Husain, vice president of the Google Developer Ecosystem, announced the news of the layoffs in an internal email to employees last week. He also told staff at a meeting that this was the biggest planned downsizing for his team this year.

“We intend to maintain our current global presence while expanding into high-growth workforce areas globally so we can operate closer to our partners and developer communities,” Husain wrote in the email, according to Google.

Google’s parent company Alphabet announced last year that the company will cut around 12,000 jobs, equivalent to 6 percent of the workforce. The reason is said to be a decline in the advertising market, although advertising revenues have picked up somewhat recently.
