May is a month full of holidays and celebrations. It provides good opportunities for getting the garden ready for the summer or going away for a long weekend.

This year, these red days are advantageous in the calendar when it comes to getting extra time off without taking too many holiday days, writes Ticket Feriereiser in a press release.

All of the red days fall on weekdays. By taking a couple of vacation days, you can get up to ten days off.

Cheaper and fewer people

– Traveling now in the spring is not only beneficial with many red days that can extend the holiday, but also in terms of temperature and crowding. In Cyprus, Crete and Rhodes, for example, it is around 25 degrees in the air and 20 degrees in the water in May – and better space on the beaches than in the height of summer, says Ellen Wolff Andresen, Marketing and Administration Manager at Ticket, in the press release.

This year, May 1st falls on a Wednesday, Ascension Day as usual on a Thursday, while May 17th falls on a Friday, right before the Whitsunday.

According to Ticket Feriereiser, it may be a good idea to travel precisely in connection with our holidays, such as 17 May and Pentecost, as these are not typical international travel weekends. This means less crowding at the destination.

– Even in terms of price, these weekends can be advantageous, as they are not as connected to travel as, for example, Easter, says Ellen Wolff Andresen.

According to the travel company, there are still trips left for the spring long weekends, but the most popular hotels sell quickly and flight prices rise the closer we get to the travel date, so it is important not to be too late, the company urges.

You are entitled to this

When it comes to work, the starting point is that there must be no work on all public holidays. If you have a fixed salary, you will not be deducted for not working on these days.

– According to the Working Environment Act, it is only permitted to work on public holidays when the “nature of the work” makes it necessary. Whether there is an opportunity to work must be assessed concretely based on the nature of the work, says Ragni Myksvoll Singh, legal HR advisor at Simployer to DinSide.

If, however, you have to work, the company is not required to give you holiday pay. This depends on which agreement you have. You should check it carefully!

1 and 17 May have their own rules. The employer must pay full wages as long as the days do not fall on Sundays or other holidays. This requires that you have been employed there continuously for the last 30 days prior to the public holidays – or that you have been employed before these days and the work has a duration of at least 30 days.

You must be paid as if it were a normal Sunday. If this is not regulated in your agreement, you must have an addition of at least 50 per cent.

– When it comes to closed days, such as the Friday after Ascension Day, there are no laws or rules that give the right to time off. If an employee wants time off on such a day, then you can apply for a holiday or possibly agree to time off if you have a flexible time scheme, says the Simployer adviser.
