Last week it was announced that King Frederik (55) and Queen Mary (52) are moving from Frederik VIII’s palace at Amalienborg Palace in Copenhagen to the Chancellery at Fredensborg Palace.
Taking action
The move will take place on 2 May, and the royal couple plan to stay there for a longer period. In advance, it also emerged that they have taken measures to increase security when they change residences.
Now the Danish newspaper BT writes that the new royal couple will not follow in Queen Margrethe’s (84) footsteps.
For several decades, Margrethe was welcomed with a torchlight procession when she changed residence, but that will not be the case this time. The tradition is now broken by King Frederik and Queen Mary, who destroy the torches.
“Since the event already starts at 5 p.m., when it’s light, the royal couple will be welcomed with flags instead of torches,” says Fredensborg municipality in a press release.
Despite the torches being replaced by flags, the municipality’s mayor, Thomas Lykke Pedersen, says that he is looking forward to welcoming the royal couple.
– It is a great pleasure that we can continue this beautiful tradition and welcome our new royal couple to Fredensborg. I know that it means a lot to the residents that we greet each other in this way, sing together and wish everyone a good summer.
Mary’s heartbreaking choice
Frederik and Mary took over Kancellihuset around the time of their wedding in May 2004. The couple had also lived there for a longer time in the past, when Frederik VIII’s palace at Amalienborg was being restored.
