According to the police, several people must have been taken by the landslide and a search is underway in the area. The police will come back with more information, says the message on X, which was published just before 4 p.m.

In a statement on Monday evening, a spokesperson for the police says that it is unclear how many are missing, but that they are looking for at least three people, writes the Swiss newspaper Blick.

The Swiss-Italian newspaper laRegione writes that fresh snow and strong winds have increased the risk of avalanches in the area recently. On Monday, the danger level should have been at the second highest level.

Both rescue teams and a helicopter are in the area, writes Radio Liechtenstein.

Zermatt is a famous winter sports destination in Switzerland and is located at the foot of the Matterhorn mountain.
