Now the researchers want you to stop eating cheese too – Document

--

The authorities’ recommendation is crystal clear: Eat less meat and more vegetables. But now researchers believe that cheese, in all varieties, is worse per kilogram for the climate than most other foodstuffs.

Only beef, lamb, frozen prawns and lobster have a higher climate footprint, figures from Aarhus University in Denmark show.

According to the researchers, the hard yellow cheese is a major climate culprit per kilo.

Yellow cheese leads to emissions of up to 8-9 kilograms of CO2 for every kilo of cheese produced. The figure is 5.5 for chicken, 4.6 for pork, 13.9 for beef and 21.4 for lamb, according to figures from Aarhus University, writes forskning.no.

They therefore claim that cheese is one of the worst climate culprits, kilo for kilo, even though it cannot be denied that cheese is both healthy and good for health.

It is worth noting that all dairy products have high emissions, around 8 percent. This makes up 18–19 per cent of the total CO2 emissions in the climate scientists’ study.

Cheese is therefore a climate culprit, and it is probably also overlooked, the researchers further claim.

The researchers hope that we will eat less of all animal products. Instead, they believe that we should eat more vegetables, fruit, legumes and nuts.

Sisse Fagt, who is a senior adviser in nutrition at the Technical University of Denmark (DTU Food Institute), also points out that other climate culprits – such as alcohol, sweets and coffee – can also be omitted.

– In contrast to cheese, these are foods that are not beneficial to health, and which can therefore be advantageously cut out, she concludes.
