Guitarist Duane Eddy has died, aged 86. He was known as the “king of twang guitar” and has inspected artists such as John Fogerty and Bruce Springsteen.

Eddy died of cancer at the Williamson Health hospital, his wife Deed Abbate said, according to the AP news agency. The hospital is located in Franklin in the US state of Tennessee, where Eddy lived.

Duane Eddy was born in the state of New York, but lived in Arizona when he had his big breakthrough with the song “Rebel-‘Rouser” in 1958. He was also known for, among other things, “Because They’re Young” and his version of Henry Mancini’s “Peter Gunn”.

Eddy is described as one of rock history’s most influential instrumentalists and was a major source of inspiration for artists such as George Harrison, Bruce Springsteen and John Fogerty, writes Guitar World.

Also Dave Davies of The Kinks, Hank Marvin of The Shadows and Mark Knopfler are among those who have stated that Eddy’s guitar playing has influenced them.

Duane Eddy’s guitar sound was what is referred to as twang, a sharp and vibrating tone, often from the guitar’s deepest strings and with a lot of resonance.

Eddy was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1994.
