Hurst, Niu Combine for Six Hits in Privateers’ Loss to Islanders

--

NEW ORLEANS – The New Orleans Privateers collected 11 hits and looked to rally late but were turned back as they lost 11-6 to the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Islanders on Saturday afternoon at Maestri Field.

The Privateers got behind in the second inning after Christian Smith-Johnson brought in the first run with an RBI ground out. The Islander lead then swelled to four runs on the back of the first three-run homer of the day from Chance Reisdorph.

New Orleans spent the rest of the game on an uphill climb. After conceding two runs in the top of the sixth, the Privateers got them back on an RBI triple from Maika Niu and a sac fly RBI from Dalton Hurst.

The Islanders struck for three more runs on the second Reisdorph homer that created more separation. New Orleans came back with a three-run inning of their own though which was started by a Victor Castillo solo home run.

New Orleans loaded the bases with two outs but Maddox Thornton came in out of the pen and recorded a strikeout to keep the Islanders in front 9-6.

From there, A&M-Corpus Christi added a run in each of the last two frames while the Privateers only generated one baserunner off Thornton who got the last seven outs for his sixth save of the season.

It’s the second consecutive season the Islanders have notched a series win against the Privateers. A&M-Corpus Christi narrowly out-hit New Orleans 12-11 on the day.
