On Wednesday afternoon, just before 4 p.m., the emergency services were notified of a drowning accident inside in Mo i Rana in Nordland. The emergency services are on site, as well as the air ambulance. A Sar Queen rescue helicopter from 330 Squadron is on its way.
Operations manager Kai Henrik Eriksen at the Nordland police district says to NRK that a person from the group of divers alerted the emergency services. There were nine in the company of divers.
– One person has been taken out and cardiopulmonary resuscitation has been started for those who were in the group, Eriksen tells the channel.
At 17.56 the police report that the diver has died.
– The rescue operation has ended and unfortunately the diver’s life could not be saved. The person was pronounced dead at the scene due to health issues. The diver is a man with US citizenship. The next of kin have been notified, writes operations manager Kai Henrik Eriksen at the Nordland police district.
The diver got into trouble while he was down in the cave passages.
– It was stated that they were 20-30 meters into and down the cave. We need to talk to those in the entourage who are on the spot for more information, he says.
The incident took place in Pluragrotten, which is located approximately four miles east of Mo i Rana in Nordland. This is the same cave where two Finnish divers died in 2014. Also in 2006, a diver died while diving in the cave system when he ran out of air as a result of damage to his diving equipment.
