Within 90 seconds of the emergency message from the container ship, the police managed to stop car traffic over the Baltimore bridge, which collapsed on Tuesday night.

Eight people fell into the water

A police officer says he was on his way to the bridge to alert construction workers working on the brother. But he didn’t make it.

Eight people fell into the water, six of whom are still missing and presumed dead. The six workers come from countries such as Guatemala, Honduras and Mexico, according to the Mexican consulate in Washington.

All of them are in their 30s and 40s, and all had families, says one of their colleagues.

Engine and steering problems.

A search operation for the dead was launched Wednesday morning local time, according to spokeswoman Elena Russo for the state police in Maryland.

A further two people were retrieved from the water after a short time, but one of them later died in hospital.

It was Tuesday night that the container ship Dali hit one of the pillars of the Francis Scott Key bridge in the port city of Baltimore in the state of Maryland. Before the accident, which caused the bridge to collapse, the ship reported engine and steering problems.
