Carlsen has won the tournament eight times, more than anyone else, but with two points in the first four games (one win, two draws and one loss) he is lagging behind. The mistakes that pitted him against Giri also do not bode well.

Carlsen had not lost to the Dutchman in long chess for 12 years, but after 35 moves he had to congratulate Giri on his victory.

With white pieces, Giri gained a small advantage early on, but it suddenly became big when, in the 22nd move, Carlsen made a springer move that the computers didn’t like very much. When Carlsen hit a pawn with the rook in his next move, the computers calculated that Giri had a winning position. 71 percent win rate jumped up to 97.

– In amateur terms, simply, was Jon Ludvig Hammer’s comment on the move in TV 2’s broadcast.

The two have met 30 times previously in long chess. Carlsen has won six, Giri one, while 22 of the games have ended in a draw.

Anish Giri leads the tournament with three points out of a possible four. Carlsen has only two points after his first four games and is currently in sixth place.
