The Manchester Evening News writes on Tuesday that Marcus Rashford will have attracted attention during the FA Cup semi-final on Sunday.

Manchester United led the match against Coventry 3–0 before collapsing towards the end of the second half and it eventually ended 3–3 after normal time. Coventry came close to a winning goal in extra time, before United eventually took the win on penalties.

– They were horrified

The Coventry players must have been almost in shock at Rashford’s performance, claims journalist Samuel Luckhurst.

– They were horrified by the way he disappeared from the match during the semi-final, writes the local newspaper.

Rashford was replaced just before full-time and there was a clear whistle concert among Manchester United’s supporters when he limped off the pitch. The 26-year-old is said to have also walked straight past the waiting press when the team later left Wembley Stadium in London.

– The Coventry players felt that Rashford was taken out of the game almost too easily in the second half and that he should have been more involved. A Coventry player actually expressed sympathy with the United fans, who had to see Rashford in action, writes the journalist.

Furthermore, the Coventry players believe that Rashford has qualities that could have decided the match for United before it went to extra time and a penalty shootout, but that throughout the match he was a shadow of what we have seen of the attacker at his best.

According to the Manchester Evening News, the future of the star player at the big club is uncertain.

Recommend summer exit

Luckhurst suggests, among other things, that the relationship between the 26-year-old and those who regularly go to United matches should be “ruined” as a result of both a lack of form this season and several issues surrounding Rashford’s discipline recently, such as when he went to the city to celebrate his birthday straight after a league defeat to city rivals Manchester City at the end of October 2023 and a drunken ball in Belfast in January this year.

In the wake of these cases, Rashford was punished by manager Erik ten Hag.

The national team player has only scored eight times in 40 games this season, compared to 30 goals last season.

In a message on X/Twitter on Monday, Luckhurst also addressed Rashford’s future at Manchester United.

– The best thing for both parties (player and club) is that they go their separate ways this summer, the journalist wrote then.

The 23/24 season has so far been disappointing for Manchester United and the club is likely to end up outside the top four in the Premier League this spring. This means that the club will soon not be in the Champions League this coming autumn.

There is also fierce speculation about the future of manager ten Hag after the disappointing season. Although United still have the opportunity to win the FA Cup this season, some believe that the Dutchman is finished after the current season.
