Israel has offered Hamas a truce of 40 days in the Gaza Strip, says British Foreign Minister David Cameron.

He says the proposal also involves the possible release of thousands of Palestinian prisoners in exchange for the remaining hostages in the Gaza Strip.

– I hope that Hamas accepts this agreement, says Cameron, who believes that the whole world should try to pressure the Palestinian group to say yes.

He calls the Israeli offer very generous, something US Foreign Minister Antony Blinken has also done.

– They have to decide, and they have to decide quickly. I hope that they will make the right decision, said Blinken earlier on Monday.

Both are attending a meeting under the auspices of the World Economic Forum in Riyadh, where ministers from a number of Arab and Western countries have gathered to discuss a ceasefire and hostage agreement between Hamas and Israel.

The USA, Egypt and Qatar have tried to broker an agreement since January, but other countries have also been involved.

A Hamas delegation is in Egypt on Monday to talk to mediators and give their response to the Israeli proposal. On Sunday evening, a senior Hamas source said that the group views the proposal positively. (NTB)
