Advertising has come to Windows 11’s start menu in the form of update KB5036980.
“Recommendations”
The update is currently optional in that you have to request updates in Windows Update to have it served. Microsoft reports: “The Recommended section of the Start menu lists some Microsoft Store apps. These apps come from a small set of curated developers. This helps you discover some of the great apps available.”

In the coming weeks, the most used apps may appear in the Recommended section of the Start menu. This applies to apps that you haven’t already pinned to the Start menu or taskbar.
The update improves the control program icons on the taskbar. They are no longer pixelated or fuzzy. This update also starts the rollout of a larger set of animated icons.
The update affects controls on the lock screen. They are more reliable and have improved quality. This update also supports more visuals and a more customized experience for you.
The update affects the touch keyboard. It causes the Japanese keyboard layout from 106 to appear as expected when you log in.
This update resolves an issue affecting settings. It stops responding when you close a submenu.
