This is confirmed by the Swiss police in a message on X on Monday evening.

It was just before 4pm that the police reported the landslide, which happened around 2pm on Monday afternoon.

In a statement on Monday evening, a spokesperson for the police said that it was unclear how many were missing, but that a search was underway for at least three people, wrote the Swiss newspaper Blick.

Anjan Truffer in the Swiss rescue service tells Blick that a total of four people were taken out of the avalanche and taken to hospital, and that the rescue operation has ended.

Just after 9 p.m., the police at X confirm that three of the four people who were taken out of the avalanche have been confirmed dead. The fourth person is described as injured.

Blick has spoken to several eyewitnesses to the avalanche, which they describe as both large and powerful.

The police state that the landslide happened near Riffelberg station.

The Swiss-Italian newspaper laRegione writes that fresh snow and strong winds have increased the risk of avalanches in the area recently. On Monday, the danger level should have been at the second highest level.

Zermatt is a famous winter sports destination in Switzerland and is located at the foot of the Matterhorn mountain.

In March, five people from the same family lost their lives in the same area. The skiers were caught in bad weather and froze to death, local authorities confirmed.
