Later this year, Volvo will show what will be the electric successor to the top model XC90. It is a car we have heard about for a long time and for which there are great expectations.
Today, Volvo has released some details, leading up to the premiere. In a live broadcast on the company’s YouTube channel, Volvo CEO Jim Rowan went through a section of all the safety systems the car is equipped with. He has also shared the date of the premiere. And has announced the name of the car.
Beforehand, there was a lot of speculation about the name itself. Several sources have claimed that Volvo should move away from the current model designations, and switch to names. A much-mentioned alternative here has been Embla. But the EXC90 also appeared as an alternative.
Showing November 9
So now it is clear what the conclusion is: Namely EX90.
During today’s broadcast, we got to see computer-animated sketches of the car. Volvo is not yet more tangible than that. They are going to hold back as much as possible until the actual premiere of the car. But at least we will know the date for it: November 9.
It is expected that the premiere will take place simultaneously in several places in the world. Probably in Sweden, USA and China. When this happens in November, it also means that production is unlikely to start until well into 2023. This means that there won’t be any customer cars at the earliest either.
Should go further and charge faster – without it costing the owners anything
Range of 600 kilometers?
What we also know is that the car will be built on the same platform (SPA2) as the Polestar 3. Thus, it is reasonable to believe that the car will, among other things, get a battery pack of 111 kWt and a range of around 600 kilometers. It is also expected that Volvo will offer several battery packs for the car.
Volvo has so far only shared images of the “Concept Recharge”, which give a clue as to what we can expect.
More traditional design
Earlier this autumn, however, the first patent images of the car were also leaked. Here we recognize a lot from today’s XC90.
Compared to the Concept Recharge, it appears that the production model will get a slightly more traditional SUV design, with, among other things, a higher roofline.
At the front, there is no longer a traditional grill, but the Tors Hammer lights will live on.
Here we get our first taste of Volvo’s future
More models on the way
At a meeting with dealers in the US earlier this year, Volvo laid out a timeline for new cars.
Specifically, it will be about five new or redesigned electric cars in the next few years. In addition, two rechargeable hybrids that will live on in new editions.
First out of the electric cars is the sequel to the XC90. In addition, it will be an SUV/crossover that sits between today’s XC60 and XC90. In that case, whether it will also be an electric version of the XC60 is a bit unclear.
It is also on the cards that there will be a model that is smaller than the current XC40/C40 – and which will then be the new entry-level car from Volvo. It will be surprising if it doesn’t become fully electric, and only that.
Volvo’s first electric car? No, it didn’t work out that way
– Perfect electric car for Norway
The information from the dealer meeting in the USA has not been officially confirmed or commented on by Volvo. Volvo’s Norwegian communications manager Erik Trosby said this to Broom earlier this year:
– We cannot comment concretely on speculation about future products, but Volvo is fully committed to electric cars and will launch several new models in various sizes in the coming years. First up is a large SUV which will be shown this year and which will be a perfect electric car for Norway. After that, we will present a new electric car that is smaller than the models we have on the market today. Until 2025, there will be many models that will suit the Norwegian market well and by 2030, Volvo will become a purely electric car brand.
