Characteristics/Mentality:

Happy hunting dog, whose main task is to hunt, preferably hare, with the help of smell. Alert, intelligent and stable. Friendly and alert, not aggressive or shy.

Size and appearance:

Robust, compactly built, powerful without seeming rough. Desired height 33 – 40 cm

Fur care:

Short, dense and weather-resistant, and requires little grooming.

History:

• The Beagle is an old breed and probably the oldest of the driving dogs we have today. The first traces of the beagle can be found in Greece in pre-Christian times. It is further believed that when the Roman Empire was at its greatest, these dogs were brought to Rome and further out to the countries the Romans occupied. Here hunting was carried out by the soldiers as a diversion from everyday life. The Romans took the dogs with them to England during the period of occupation. The word beagle is not found in historical sources until the 15th century, but it is assumed that these dogs have been regularly used for hunting up until this time. It was said that Queen Elizabeth I, who ruled in the 16th century, loved these dogs.
• The Beagle was eventually divided into two development lines. One where the beagle was still used as a hunting dog for hares in packs (where up to 40 dogs hunted together) and the other an exhibition or lap dog called a show beagle. The first beagles that came to the country were pack dogs or from pack lines. Dogs with a great desire to hunt, cooperativeness and good malleability that were valued. The target use of the individual dog did not matter so much as it still sounded good when a pack of many dogs chased. Today, the breed has been refined into a beagle that has a good search and much better target use. The desire to hunt is still there in abundance, and the beagle is largely cooperative and malleable.
