In February, it became known that the football federations in Denmark and Sweden will make another attempt to have the women’s EC play-offs, but this time it will happen without Norway and Finland.

Last spring, the Nordic countries lost the battle to host the 2025 championship.

The Norwegian Football Association has not given up on taking part in the new EC plans.

– We have hope because it has been said that there is hope. Denmark and Sweden are fronting it, and we will step in and support it with our capital. But of course we have to persuade them first, and I will not do that via the media, says NFF president Lise Klaveness to Fotbollskanalen.

Sweden’s football president Fredrik Reinfeldt has been to Norway and met Klaveness, but is adamant that they should only apply with Denmark.

– We have to make an application that we think can win support from Uefa. To be honest, we weren’t very close last time when we got to the final vote. We have to do this in a different way. So I know that there are different opinions, and we will meet this summer and talk about this, says Reinfeldt and continues:

– But I want to be very clear that the conclusion has been that it is better to have two host countries.

Sweden’s former prime minister points out that the evaluation of the Nordic 2025 application pointed out that four nations were too much. In addition, it was stated that some arenas did not maintain a high enough standard.

– That’s why we sat down and asked which countries had the best arena possibilities and were close enough to make a better offer. We came to the conclusion that Sweden and Denmark were, says Reinfeldt.

The European Football Association (Uefa) is expected later this year to come out with the criteria for hosting in 2029. Once that is in place, Denmark’s and Sweden’s football associations will make a final decision to apply.
