The short version

  • Norway’s Handball Association ended up with a financial deficit of NOK one million after the World Cup at home, while Denmark and Sweden had better results.
  • The handball girls had 36,870 spectators in their matches. This accounted for 73 per cent of the capacity in the venues.
  • Expensive tickets became a theme during the WC and led to adjusted prices in some matches.
  • The handball association’s president, Kåre Geir Lio, believes the deficit does not affect Norway’s future events and will take action ahead of the men’s World Cup.

The Norwegian Handball Association states that the Norwegian part of the WC event ran a loss of NOK one million. Co-organisers Denmark and Sweden got a better result. The Danes made a profit of six million, while the Swedes broke even.

All according to handball president Kåre Geir Lio. He points out that NOK 1.3 million was added to the South West and North regions at the same time.

The president believes the deficit will not bind Norway in the future. The Handball Association organizes five championships in the course of eight years.

– We have to be brave and dry, says Lio. Norway will have a large part of the WC for men next season.

Norway organized a total of 23 WC matches in the group stage, main round and quarter-finals. The handball girls attracted 36,870 spectators in their matches – which made up 73 per cent of the capacity in the venues DNB Arena (Stavanger) and Trondheim Spektrum.

– The Christmas table season is underway, perhaps? That’s my best bet really, Nora Mørk humorously told VG after one of the matches in Trondheim.

Expensive World Cup tickets became a topic during the World Cup. This led to adjusted prices in some matches.

– The sum for a family at war was too high. There we are making moves ahead of the WC for men. So that it makes more sense to travel with you and your friends to a handball match, says Kåre Geir Lio.
