Randaberg, Health | Want to start a completely new offer: – We have an ever-increasing demand

--

– We are now applying for funds to implement the project “Friskliv SENIOR”, inspired by Friskliv Jæren, who has done something similar with great success. We have visited Friskliv Gjesdal to see how they organize their offer, and have faith that we can achieve an equally successful offer in Randaberg”, writes the Frisklivsentralen in Randaberg in an application to Rogaland county council.

The Frisklivsentralen in Randaberg is a competence center in relation to lifestyle change and life management related to the areas of physical activity, nutrition, tobacco, sleep, stress management, as well as living with long-term health challenges. The Frisklivsentralen was established in 2018.

– Since then, we have had steadily increasing numbers, and now have full groups. Our target group is residents of Randaberg of working age who want help to get started with lifestyle change, or who need help learning to master various health challenges they have, they write in the application.

Randaberg municipality is applying for NOK 183,000 in grants for the establishment and development of leisure, learning and coping services, which the county council distributes.

Increasing number of people

The purpose of the project is to promote good physical and mental health, as well as prevent and manage illness for residents over 60 years of age.

The project is part of the municipality’s overall plans for health promotion and preventive work. The Frisklivsentralen in Randaberg will be responsible for the administration and execution of the training, but it will be in collaboration with the established offer “Gladtrimmen”, which is run by “Livsglede for eldre” in Randaberg.

– We have an increasing number of people over the age of 60 who make contact related to a desire for lifestyle change, and in particular help to get started and maintain physical activity. The challenges of including this entire group in the regular offers at the Wellness Center are that they often make up the bulk of the participants in the training, and thus help define the target group at the Wellness Center. This leads to potentially younger participants opting out of follow-up at Frisklivsentralen, which we believe is an unfortunate development, they write in the application.

– For a period, we have had a training group under the auspices of the physiotherapy department, where we have referred most participants over the age of 65. This has been a stable group, and we think they will form the basis of “Friskliv senior”, it continues.

Also social arena

The public health profile of the municipality shows that one of the biggest challenges in the next 20 years will be the large increase in the elderly, the application further states.

– In this context, it is crucial to prioritize preventive measures, which aim to ensure that residents can live at home for as long and as independently as possible, in line with the “Live your whole life” reform. Only one in three elderly people meets the physical recommendations from the Norwegian Directorate of Health. We want to contribute to more elderly people in Randaberg having the opportunity to meet these criteria, the application states.

The voluntary organization “Livsglede for eldre” has for over 30 years had an offer called “Gladtrimmen”. A training offer during the day aimed at the pensioner group in the municipality. This is a well-established and very popular offer, where most participants are from their late 70s up to well over 90.

– Together we want to establish “Friskliv Senior”, which will target residents aged 60-75, which is currently an age group that the Frisklivsentralen does not have the opportunity to offer, and which Gladtrimmen does not reach, they write further.

Food and coffee will also be served after training to ensure that this also becomes a social arena, and helps prevent loneliness.

Start-up is planned from August 2024.
