Taste test new ice cream – The highlight of the year!

--

The snow has melted, we have found the small shoes and the sun is peeking out. What better way to celebrate spring with one of this year’s new ice creams?

We’ve tasted thirteen of this year’s ice cream innovations, and there’s a lot to look forward to here!

Compared to previous years, there are few sensational news. It’s almost as if the producers have had a conversation. Here are different, safe varieties of flavors we like: strawberry and white chocolate, and different varieties of cream or chocolate ice cream, covered with chocolate, perhaps with a little caramel or crumble in the mix.

When you first launch something that people recognize and love, you must not only do it well – but better than what is already on the market. Here, there is probably a little way to go for some of the manufacturers, but some stand out.

This year’s best ice cream still managed to impress on all levels, but that requires that you love salty licorice and are ready for a real flavor bomb. And if you’re not, luckily there are plenty of other great things to choose from. Just look here:

This is how we tested:

  • Six journalists from DinSide and Dagbladet’s SoMe department have had a taste of this year’s ice cream news.
  • The ice cream is assessed according to appearance, fragrance, consistency, taste – and how well it meets the expectations from the package – the test is therefore not carried out as a blind test.
  • Energy stated is per piece.
  • The ice cream has been tested in week 10, 2024.

Litago: Birthday cake

Weight: 125 grams
Energy: 224 kcal

Litago turns 30 and celebrates with a birthday ice cream cake in a box. The design here appeals to several of the test panel, and we’re guessing this will also make it onto Instagram. But what does birthday cake actually taste like?

After some discussion, we expect something sweet, perhaps strawberry flavored – and with sprinkles in pastel colours. That is only partly true. According to Diplom-Is, the taste should be a combination of strawberries, sugar bread, white chocolate and passion fruit.

The strawberry flavor is clear, and excessively sweet. In addition, it tastes a bit like marshmallow fluff, and it feels a bit like that in terms of texture and – which is absolutely wonderful, among the very best in the test.

Unfortunately, this is way too sweet.

– Here we are promised a birthday, but it feels a bit like someone has forgotten to set things up.

Diplom-Ice: Split

Weight: 60 grams
Energy: 87 kcal

The combination of ice cream and soft ice cream is a bit love-hate. Some love, some hate, and so it is also in the test panel. No one is indifferent to this.

The taste nevertheless confuses an entire test panel. Not everyone found the melon taste, but if you look closely, there is some cantaloupe or honeydew melon here, without it hitting your taste buds.

Oslo’s best sausage: – Can’t get better!

The problem is, however, an overwhelming and artificial vanilla flavor that is so strong that it almost becomes a bit minty. Even those who dig the controversial combination do not become significantly enthusiastic. There are much better variants of this.

– This one gives me goosebumps!

– It’s fun that they bring the classics out of oblivion, but didn’t they have something better to wear? Are they starting to run out of treats?

– The 80s called. They wanted their ice cream back.

Polar bear-Ice: Velvet

- The highlight of the year!

Weight: 61 grams
Energy: 188 kcal

This ice cream looks like Freia Milk Chocolate Ice Cream, and it’s not too far off. It’s chocolate ice cream with chocolate coating, but the chocolate core has been replaced with a hazelnut nougat core.

Perhaps because we have tasted the other one, we are a little extra disappointed here. The chocolate ice cream has little taste, the chocolate coating is thin, tastes cheap, and the hazelnut nougat has a slightly perfumed aftertaste. It is nevertheless the hint of nuts that saves the ball here.

The consistency is nice, but it doesn’t help when you’re left with the feeling of having eaten cheap calendar chocolate.

Diplom-Ice: Royal, White chocolate and strawberries

- The highlight of the year!

Weight: 65 grams
Energy: 207 kcal

This is the ice cream you should be able to serve at a gender reveal party, if you’re having a girl. Or on girls’ night. But it is perhaps best suited to a child’s birthday with a Barbie or rose theme, because this is cute.

The ice cream is a classic Royal, with a baby pink strawberry ice cream, dipped in white chocolate. There is both a good thickness and consistency to the chocolate coating. The ice cream also has a nice and velvety consistency and tastes even sweeter than it looks.

The associations go in the direction of marzipan cake, strawberry ice cream in tress ice cream, mochi ice cream and milkshakes. An insta-friendly, sweet, ice cream, but not very exciting. This can quickly become nauseating.

– Are there pink bloggers anymore? This should fit perfectly. Very insta-friendly.

Magnum: Double Sunlover

- The highlight of the year!

Weight: 75 grams
Energy: 238 kcal

This ice cream was launched last year, now it comes in a three pack, and in a slightly smaller size. It suits it.

The pin ice cream looks like a slightly overgrown Ferrero Raffaelo, and it smells sweetly of summer, the South, sunscreen and umbrella drinks. Or coconut and tropical fruits, if you like. This is the ice cream that smells the most in this year’s test.

The ice cream is pretty, and looks even fresher when we take a bite, the golden sauce makes this very tempting.

It tastes great, and the tangy mango sauce goes well with the sweet taste of coconut and white chocolate, but it’s still not enough. It will be way too sweet.

– Here, a lot happens at once.

– This is good, but I don’t have the chance to eat a whole one like that.

Hennig-Olsen: Crème deluxe

- The highlight of the year!

Weight: 70 grams
Energy: 287 kcal

This Crème ice cream is ice cream with chocolate sauce, a layer of caramel, and covered in a thick and good layer of chocolate, may remind you a bit of a triple, but there are only two layers. That’s more than enough.

This tastes like it should, it’s ice cream, caramel and chocolate, and the taste can remind you a bit of Lion chocolate, only without the crunchy elements. It’s sweet, it’s good, but it’s a bit violent, we’d like to see something that makes up for all the sweetness. It takes guts to devour a whole.

– This one speaks my language!

– This is the school example that you can have too much of a good thing. This one in a candy bar version? Yes please. But a whole one? I have to register my passport.

Diplom-Ice: Royal chocolate

- The highlight of the year!

Weight: 63 grams
Energy: 208 kcal

This ice cream looks nice, has a good size, but haven’t we seen this before? Here we have chocolate ice cream with chocolate sauce in it, covered with chocolate with caramel pieces.

This is an ice cream that makes us want to eat, without necessarily arousing our curiosity. It’s nice to have a frill, but here it’s sweet on sweet on sweet. Could have gone with a bit of salt in the caramel, or chosen a bit more bitter chocolate?

– This is good, old, fun.

– But not very exciting. We have eaten this before.

Hennig-Olsen: Haaland

- The highlight of the year!

Weight: 54 grams
Energy: 78 kcal

– Oh, it was small!

– A very small ice cream from such a big man.

When one of Norway’s biggest sports stars (and by that we mean biggest in up to several senses of the word) launches an ice cream, it is somewhat curious that it is the smallest ice cream in the test.

Fortunately, it tastes good. It’s vanilla ice cream with caramel sauce, dipped in chocolate with crisps. It gives a good crunch, and some Crispo associations, which we like. But this also feels like something we’ve eaten before.

– It reminds me of Drillo ice cream, but it was better.

The caramel sauce could have been a little saltier, it would perhaps also have jacked up the other flavors a notch. This is mild, sweet and good, a very child-friendly ice cream. And when it’s so much on the sweet side, it’s actually smart that the ice cream isn’t that big.

– It’s nice, but not very exciting.

Didn’t want to say with the Drillo ice cream: – It should have been red

Magnum Collection: White chocolate & cookies

- The highlight of the year!

Weight: 74 grams
Energy: 229 kcal

This ice cream looks delicious and good, we can’t wait to taste it! That it is Oreo that are cookies in this context is visible on the package, but based on the name we expected more classic American cookies.

It’s sweet, without being overpowering, and it gives us something new. Now, Oreos are pretty bland cookies, with little other than vanilla flavor, but this ice cream is still a heck of a lot more complex than the somewhat (let’s be honest) boring American cookie.

The consistency of the ice cream, the chocolate, and with the crunch from the biscuit in the coating makes it a bit refined and this one stands out in the flora of rather straight popsicles with a taste of (white) chocolate and some crunch.

– This is not exactly a flavor bomb, but it is elegant and delicate.

SoftShake: Cookie Dough

- The highlight of the year!

Weight: 135 grams
Kcal: 279 kcal per piece.

The name tempts the test panel. SoftShake with cookie dough. But the packaging is confusing. Why is it… blue?

– This looks like the cheap version of Ben & Jerry’s.

The taste, however, is not so much cheap as nostalgic. It tastes like ready-made chocolate sauce of the kind you had at home, with almost as much vanilla aroma as chocolate.

But here are good pieces of cookie dough, which are chewy and good to chew on, and together with the chocolate sauce, this is a welcome novelty.

– This will be my new guilty pleasure.

– This one is exactly what it should be.

Dice 5.

Magnum: Classic: Ice cream with vanilla

Looks sustainable – sustainably grown cocoa

- The highlight of the year!

Weight: 81 grams
Energy: 247 kcal

This one looks like something we’ve seen before, and we have – this is a relaunch. It’s ice cream, coated with chocolate. But what they have realized is that if you are to deliver a completely standard stick ice cream, then you have to do it well. And they deliver for good.

The ice cream is velvety smooth and creamy, with a good taste of vanilla, without being too much. The chocolate coating is thick, good, and a little on the dark side, so it’s not too sweet.

– This delivers exactly what it promises, but better than expected.

Magnum White: Chocolate Strawberry

- The highlight of the year!

Weight (per piece): 81 grams
Energy: 233 kcal

This is not pure news either, but the popsicle now comes in a multipack and in a slightly smaller size. The ice cream is pretty, and may remind you of the Royal ice cream, but this one has that little something extra and is a clear favorite of the two among everyone in the test panel.

A sweet but fresh strawberry sauce elevates this from being a small, sweet ice cream to something we will want to eat again and again. Lucky that it comes in a four-pack.

– This was really cool!

Diplom-Ice: Supersalt Hockey powder

- The highlight of the year!

Weight: 70 grams
Energy: 217 kcal

This is the ice cream that clearly arouses the most enthusiasm. Year after year, producers try to make good licorice ice cream, but the last trick is missing.

– It looks completely wild!

The ice cream may not win any beauty contests, but it’s still tempting. Here is ice cream, with a core of licorice, topped with salmiak licorice and dipped in hockey powder sprinkles. It promises to be super salty, and it delivers. This is a real flavor bomb.

It must be said that here the test panel is somewhat divided – those who love licorice, and those who hate it. Among the skeptics, this is no hit, but then they are not in the target group either. This is an ice cream no one is indifferent to!

We had to go a round to see if the victory had to break, since a couple of the test panel gave it a bottom score. But when the starting point is that you don’t like either hockey powder or salmiak licorice, we choose to ignore it, because the licorice congregation rejoices.

– This is the highlight of the year! I love it!

– Absolutely unique, I’ve never eaten anything like it before!
