Discord users will reportedly soon start seeing ads when using the popular chat app. The Wall Street Journal reports.

According to the newspaper, Discord plans to roll out ad integration as early as this week. It will be about advertising for games, delivered by publishers and developers, in the form of what Discord calls Sponsored Quests.

These advertisements will appear at the bottom left of the application window, in what the Discord team describes as a “tasteful way”.

The missions promise various rewards, and are about playing and streaming selected games through Discord. When you accept a sponsor mission, your Discord friends will be notified that you are in action. Rewards you receive then apparently depend on how many people come or how long they stay to watch the game session.

Discord tested ads last year, with so-called Sponsored Quests for Fortnite.

– We get you in before players, and those players get you in before their friend groups, explains Discord in a presentation to developers (via the Wall Street Journal).

It should supposedly be possible to turn off ads for games you are not interested in.

As Ars Technica comments, the measure is directly at odds with previous statements from Discord. In January, the company pointed out that precisely the lack of advertising was one of the biggest differences between Discord and other social media. Now it has apparently passed.
