It is the first time since the Hamas attack on Israel on October 7 that the US has stopped a weapons delivery to the Israeli military, writes Axios on Sunday.

The United States has supplied large quantities of ammunition and other war material to Israel’s warfare in the Gaza Strip.

Neither the Pentagon, the US State Department nor the Israeli Prime Minister’s office have responded to Axio’s questions about the matter.

Increasing criticism

President Joe Biden has come under increasing criticism at home for his unwavering support for Israel as the humanitarian disaster in the Gaza Strip has worsened.

Biden has warned Israel against invading the city of Rafah in the south of the Gaza Strip, where over 1 million Palestinian war refugees are crammed together.

In recent days, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has made several statements in which he says he intends to order an invasion of Rafah – regardless of whether Israel and Hamas agree on an agreement on a ceasefire and the release of hostages.

The US is deeply involved in the ceasefire negotiations, where Egyptian and Qatari mediators together with Hamas have tried to reach an agreement at the weekend. Israel sent no delegation to the talks. Netanyahu stated on Sunday that Israel will not agree to Hamas’s demand that an agreement must involve an end to the war.

Massive military support

Since 1948, Israel has received over NOK 2,000 billion in aid from the United States, and in the last 25 years everything has been in the form of military support. A ten-year agreement that only expires in 2028 secures the country close to NOK 42 billion annually.

On top of this comes a number of additional appropriations, the latest of close to NOK 190 billion, passed in the House of Representatives in Congress in April.

57 billion of these billions will go to replenish and expand Israel’s air defenses, just over 38 billion will go to the purchase of new weapons systems. 11 billion is support for Israel’s arms industry, while just over 26 billion goes to the USA’s own operations in the region.

Guarantees

In February, the Biden administration asked Israel to provide guarantees that American-made weapons were used in Gaza in violation of international law. Israel, which is being investigated by the UN court for possible genocide against the Palestinians, gave the US a letter with such assurances in March, writes Axios.

Israel has always claimed that the Israeli army is fighting a legitimate war in line with the international law of war in Gaza.
