The economic crisis in Argentina is also affecting the education sector.

At the country’s most prestigious university, the University of Buenos Aires (UBA), they have now taken drastic measures to be able to continue to keep operations going.

Last week they closed all the lifts at the university, and this week they also turned off the lights in the corridors.

Similar measures have also been taken at several other public educational institutions.

It was NRK that first reported this in Norway on its news broadcast on Thursday morning.

276 percent inflation

The meager university finances are primarily due to the fact that the country’s far-right president, Javier Gerardo Milei, has severely cut the budgets of all the public universities.

The budgets for 2024 have not been adjusted in relation to last year’s inflation.

In the last 12 months, Argentina has had the world’s highest inflation, at an insane 276 percent.

Javier Gerardo Milei won the Argentine election with 56 percent of the vote.

Strong anxiety

When Milei was elected president last November, many Argentine researchers expressed strong concern about what would happen to the country’s higher education sector.

Chrono has previously written about the controversial president, who has a background as a professor of economics.

In connection with his presidential campaign, he stated that, among other things, he wanted to close down Argentina’s central bank, replace pesos with dollars and privatize loss-making state enterprises.
