Over the past year, Taylor Swift has reached new heights in the United States and is perhaps the most popular American right now.

The artist influences both culture, sport and the economy in the United States. The question is whether she can influence American politics in addition.

A poll conducted for Newsweek shows that 18 percent of American voters say they are more likely or significantly more likely to vote for a candidate supported by the pop star.

– The power of celebrities has increased

Swift was named Time Magazine’s “person of the year” in 2023, and after her relationship with American football player Travis Kelce became known, the sport’s viewership increased considerably.

– Celebrities’ power in elections has increased because their power in itself has increased. Media and social media are now the central organizing framework in many Americans’ lives. And in a world flooded with messages, it’s the celebrity voices that really resonate, says Haggerty.

Although a surprising number said they could be influenced to vote with Swift, there were also 17 percent who thought they would most likely vote the opposite. At the same time, 55 per cent said that they would not be affected from or until.

Affects young people

The star can still play a significant role when Americans vote for their new president in November. Taylor Swift has a significantly larger following among young people.

As many as three out of ten Americans under 35 say they would be able to be influenced to vote for a candidate supported by Swift, according to the survey.

In this year’s election, the young voters are once again singled out as the key to a victory. Newsweek writes that as many as 41 million members of Gen Z will be able to vote in this year’s election. 8 million of them may become first-time voters.

Young voters have leaned against the Democratic candidate in recent elections, but opinion polls over the past six months have shown that Trump can attract more of them this time.

Swift has largely stayed out of politics, but supported the Democratic candidates in the 2018 Tennessee midterm elections.

It remains to be seen whether the popular artist steps into the political limelight, and whether she actually has a real influence on voters.
