Julia Wandelt (21) made headlines around the world when she came out and claimed she was the missing Madeleine McCann.

In 2007, three-year-old McCann disappeared during the family holiday in Praia da Luz in Portugal.

Wandelt has posted a number of photos and videos on Instagram, which she says show the similarities between herself and McCann.

The photos and videos have received millions of views.

Wandelt has said that she was adopted when she was little, and that she remembers little from her childhood.

She has nevertheless said that she has memories of a place similar to the resort in Portugal.

Now the Swiss software company Ava-X has put the pictures of Julia Wandelt under the microscope.

They have used a facial recognition program to look more closely at photos of both her and Madeleine McCann.

Ava-X usually uses the program to help the police identify criminals.

They also collaborate with voluntary organizations that try to reunite missing children with their parents.

After studying the photos of Wandelt, they say there is no doubt that she is not Madeleine McCann.

– It is practically impossible that the young Pole is Maddie, says Ava-X manager Christian Fehrlin to the Swiss newspaper Blick.

Splits up the face

He explains that the software searches for characteristics using so-called vectors.

Vector files use mathematical equations, lines and curves with fixed points on a grid to produce an image.

The program divides the image of the face into several pieces, and checks whether there is any correspondence with the facial parts of other images in the databases.

Furthermore, he says that the company, among other things, compared a childhood photo of Wandelt with a photo of her as an adult.

– It was a match. But, when we did the same with Maddie’s picture, we didn’t get a match, says Fehrlin.

He emphasizes that you can never rule something out one hundred percent, but that the software used is very precise.

On social media, Julia Wandelt claims that Madeleine’s parents have agreed to take a DNA test, but this has not been confirmed by other sources.

The parents, Kate and Gerry McCann, have not commented on Wandelt’s claims.

Little faith

Jørn Lier Horst, former head of investigation in the police – today a crime writer, has previously told Dagbladet that he has little faith that the solution to the McCann case lies with the Polish woman.

– The police have Madeleine’s DNA profile, so there is no need to contact the parents again to carry out analyzes or obtain material, Horst told Dagbladet.

At the end of February, the Polish police came out and rejected that Wandelt could be Madeleine McCann, wrote the Polish website Gazeta.

Pawel Noga of the provincial police in Wroclaw said the results of the investigation do not match the 21-year-old’s claims.

– The investigation is still ongoing, but it can already be ruled out that this version is true, Noga told the website.

The police are certain that Madeleine McCann is dead, and they have a perpetrator in their sights.

Last year, it became known that Portuguese prosecutors have formally suspected a German citizen of the disappearance.
