– I feel a lot of emotions when I write this. I’m sad, sad, disappointed that it’s the way it is and there’s nothing we can do about it, writes Maria Stavang, also known as “Piateed” on Instagram after her colleague was provoked.

VGTV chose to close the comment field on TikTok after incitement and criticism of comedian Martha Leivestad’s roast by Erik Follestad during “Rikets roast”.

The comedy show went off the air at Sentrum Scene last week and was broadcast on VGTV on Saturday evening – see clips further down in the story and the full broadcast here.

Several celebrities have reacted and given their support to Leivestad. So does Stavang.

In addition, she shares her own unpleasant experiences with harassment, and what consequences this has had for her:

– I’ve said no to Laughter Live for the past 3 years with the excuse that it didn’t fit, when the reason has been that the comment section under my Facebook video from 2020 is one of the most damning things I’ve read and seen. I don’t even open it on TikTok, she writes.

Discrimination

When Leivestad addressed the harassment on TikTok on Sunday, she also commented on how she cannot joke in the same way as others without being provoked:

– Urgh, I have received quite a few rude comments after the roast of Folle. VGTV on TikTok had to close the comment field on a video of mine, because it went too far with hate comments. It’s a shame that I’m not allowed to roast and joke on the same level as the other comedians, without being torn to shreds in the comments section afterwards. By then anonymous users seff, she writes.

Follestad himself wrote a long and furious post on Instagram afterwards in support of Leivestad.

Stavang also addresses how women are treated differently from their male comedian colleagues:

– What is so absurd is that our normal is that we are surprised when boys come up and give us a compliment. That we switch sides on the street when gangs of young boys come towards us because we don’t know what we will get, writes Stavang and continues:

– That we are not allowed to stand together at club nights because there can only be one “female comedian” where the excuse is that the audience is not used to several at once. That we are quotated because we are a number that must be filled up. That when I write this, I am a feminist and a man-hater.

– You are told that you are a whore

Furthermore, Stavang writes that incitement is one of the reasons why there are so few women in the profession.

– [ …] why are there more male comedians than female? Well, because you’re not told you’re a whore who deserves to die when you make a joke. I guess, writes Stavang.

– I’ve been trying to do standup on this for many years but can’t find a punchline for it. Simply because it is so damn sad, she writes and ends by saying that Martha is one of the funniest people she knows.
