Six people were shot and killed in a Walmart store in the United States on Tuesday. Among those killed was a 16-year-old boy.
The perpetrator, who was an employee and shift manager in the store, took his own life after the murders, according to the police.
The incident took place in Chesapeake, Virginia on Tuesday evening, just a couple of days before the Thanksgiving holiday.
Now witnesses are telling how they experienced the fatal minutes, when the shift manager who had worked in the chain of stores for 12 years suddenly opened fire, around 10 pm local time.
– Picked out people
Jessica Wilczewski had only been working at the store for five days when the shooting took place. She has spoken to several media, including the news agency AP.
– The way he behaved – he was going hunting. The way he looked at people’s faces and the way he did it – he picked people out, Wilczewski told the AP.
She says that the team was gathered for the usual meeting in the break room before the night shift, when the shift manager came in and started shooting with a gun.
According to Wilczewski, he shot at people who were already lying on the ground.
– He made sure that those he wanted to kill were dead. He went back and shot people who were already dead. To be sure, she says.
At one point, Wilczewski hid under a table. Then she says that the perpetrator asked her to come upstairs.
When she came up he is said to have said “Jessie, go home”. Wilczewski says she calmly walked out of the room before running out to her car.
She says she believes the fact that she was a new hire may have saved her life.
All those killed were employees
Police have not released what they believe was the motive behind the shooting. According to CNN, all those killed were colleagues of the perpetrator, although there were also customers in the store.
Two of those killed were found dead in the break room, while another was found at the front of the shop. The remaining three died in hospital.
Another of the employees who witnessed the incident, Briana Tyler, says the perpetrator seemed to be shooting wildly around.
– He just shot across the room. It didn’t matter who he hit, says Tyler to AP.
Another employee, Kevin Harper, says according to CNN in a Facebook video that he had just left the break room when the gunman entered.
In the state of Colorado, five people were killed and 18 injured in a mass shooting just days earlier, at a gay and other queer nightclub. The alleged perpetrator here is charged with murder and hate crime.
