At 19.50, Ofoten fire moved to an automatic fire alarm in a block of flats in Dronningens gate.

– There were open flames and fire in the apartment when the fire brigade arrived. Fortunately, there is both an automatic fire alarm to the 110 central and a sprinkler system in the building. It helped that we quickly got the fire under control, says Supervisor at the 110 switchboard in Nordland, Andreas Skindlo.

Major water damage

– Yes, major water damage has been reported in the block due to the sprinkler system, he says.

Operations manager at the police in Nordland, Tormod Bikset says that the water damage causes problems for those who live in the block of flats.

– The water damage means that the residents of the block will probably not be able to return to the apartment tonight, he says.

Hotel

– Will accommodation be arranged for the residents?

– People are free to live where they want. In the main, hotel accommodation arranged through the insurance will be arranged for those who do not have a place to stay for the night, says Bikset

All apartments in the block have been confirmed evacuated/empty. A resident from the apartment is checked out by health personnel. No one else appeared to be affected by fire or smoke and the fire has been extinguished, the police announced on Twitter shortly after 8.30pm.
