Google releases a new Chromecast with a lower price

At Tek you will find cases with advertisement links, where you can either buy the products we have mentioned or compare prices. We believe this is relevant information for our readers.

Which products Tek will write about, and what we will write about them, is chosen by the journalists and no one else. But it is also important that you know that if you click on such an ad link for price comparison at Prisjakt, or buy a product after clicking through to a store from one of our articles, Tek makes money. These advertisement links are always marked with “ad link”.

It is important to emphasize that when we mention products at Tek, it is because we think it is journalistically interesting. No one can buy publicity in our cases.

In tests or product guides, the main rule in VG is that we buy or borrow the product. If it is not practically possible, we base the review on product samples we have been sent. If so, we will inform you about which product and why.

For those who do not need 4K support.

Google’s small streaming box or media center Chromecast has now been released in a new edition. So we are constantly talking about the fourth generation Chromecast, the one with remote control that we tested this summer. But the new version does not support resolutions higher than Full HD, or 1080p if you like.

This, in turn, has also led to Google being able to lower the price of the product.

The new HD version has the same physical dimensions as the 4K version.

The new HD version has the same physical dimensions as the 4K version.

Google itself just calls it Chromecast with Google TV (HD), and as far as we can tell, it does pretty much the same job as the more powerful version with the option of 4K resolution.

This means that with the new HD version you also get both HDR and Dolby sound, but it seems that support for Dolby Vision has been removed. On the other hand, it is questionable whether the TV you are going to connect it to could actually benefit from it.

In Google’s own store, Chromecast with Google TV (HD) has been given a price tag of NOK 449, and thus includes the remote control. That is NOK 350 less than the 4K version.

The point here is that you should be able to avoid paying extra for 4K resolution if you “only” use it anyway to get some modern smart functions and streaming options for an older television set or screen.

There are, after all, still a number of TVs in operation that only have 1920 x 1080 (or fewer) pixels to boast of, and then strictly speaking it will not help that the Chromecast can push out 4K resolution.

In those cases, the new edition could be a more favorable choice.
